North Carolina Children and Families Need More Inclusive Care.
 

Across North Carolina, families face significant barriers to finding childcare that is affordable, available, and inclusive.
 

• 12.5% of North Carolinians live below the poverty line, and children make up more than one fifth of the state's population.

• 44% of North Carolina families live in a childcare desert, an area where the supply of licensed childcare does not meet the needs of young children. Families in rural communities, families with infants and toddlers, and families of children with disabilities face particular challenges accessing care.

• North Carolina has approximately 11.2 million residents, including more than 2.3 million children under 18, creating a significant need for accessible early learning and youth support services.

• In North Carolina, 7.5% of children ages 5 to 17 have a disability, more than 172,000 children statewide, underscoring the importance of childcare and educational environments prepared to support children with diverse needs.
